Phillip Menzel returns to his homeland and joins third division club 1. FC Saarbrücken. As the Saarland team announced on Thursday, the 25-year-old is transferring for free from Austrian Bundesliga club Austria Klagenfurt, where he did not renew his expiring contract.

Menzel moved to Carinthia in 2020 and was promoted to the Bundesliga with the team in 2021. He has made 31 appearances for Klagenfurt so far this season. In Saarbrücken, he should now replace Tim Schreiber, on loan to Leipzig.

“We wanted to clarify the goalkeeper position early on and are happy to have been able to recruit an experienced goalkeeper despite his young age. “Phillip has been playing at a high level in the Austrian Premier League for four years and can bring the necessary stability and sovereignty in goal,” coach and manager Rüdiger Ziehl said of the transfer.
