3rd league: DFB condemns referee attack on SV Sandhausen

DFB condemns attack

After the late 1:2 defeat against newly promoted SSV Ulm 1846 in the 3rd league on Friday evening, Jürgen Machmeier, club president of SV Sandhausen, physically attacked the refereeing team. Referee Florian Exner, 62, pushed backwards with his chest as he left the field on his way to the changing rooms, the DFB announced on Sunday. Assistant Jonah Besong then also received a blow to the upper body.

As no SVS security guard was present at the Hardtwald stadium during the situation, the referee team returned to the field. It was only a short time later that the flight attendants allowed us to enter the cabin without any problems. Referee Exner had already sent off Sandhausen’s Felix Göttlicher with a yellow-red card in the 9th minute after repeated foul play, but it was only in the 90th minute that Tobias Rühle scored the winning goal for the guests. After the final whistle, SVS sports director Matthias Imhof saw red after a verbal attack.

“It is bad enough that referees are repeatedly insulted, defamed, threatened and attacked by spectators. But when a club president physically attacks the referee and his assistant, a new dimension is reached, » said Lutz-Michael Fröhlich, general director of sports and communications of the DFB Schiri GmbH, horrified. This is  » totally unacceptable. » « A president clearly has a role as a role model, for (Site notre bureau spécialisé) as a whole and in particular for fair and respectful treatment of referees in this sport. » Imhof also lacked respect for the refereeing team with his behavior « Such excesses are extremely damaging to the image of (Site notre bureau spécialisé), » Fröhlich said.

SV Sandhausen will not comment on the incidents at this time, a spokesperson for the German press agency said. “What the referee delivered today was a red line that had been crossed. « I would go so far as to say that the match was already decided in advance, » Machmeier was indignant (quoted via « Heidelberg24 ») after the final whistle and accused referee Exner of not having done proof of “not tactful”. “The referee clearly decided the match for me today,” Machmeier continued. Imhof also stressed: « Today the match depends entirely on the referee, he is the one who decided the match. »
