Hollerbach turns the game
The miracle did not happen: Arminia Bielefeld was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga during the relegation against SV Wehen Wiesbaden and has to face difficult times. After the embarrassing 0:4 in the first leg, which was overshadowed by rioting fans, the East Westphalians lost 1:2 (1:2) in the second meeting on Tuesday. For Arminia, this is the second consecutive descent. The traditional Bundesliga club only crashed out in 2022. Wehen Wiesbaden, meanwhile, celebrated their third promotion to the second division after 2007 and 2019. In the second leg in Bielefeld, Fabian Klos (4th minute) scored scored the hosts’ only goal. Benedict Hollerbach scored twice for Wehen Wiesbaden (35./45.+2).
As soon as the Bielefeld players ran into the stadium to warm up, the dislike of some fans sounded towards them. « We are Arminen and you are not, » chanted supporters. For Arminia, it was all about damage limitation. Coach Uwe Koschinat has made five changes to his starting XI, including the identification figure Klos in the starting lineup. It was worth it.
Klos’ first 1-0 brought back some support and self-confidence. Bielefeld accepted duels and created scoring opportunities. Wehen Wiesbaden, on the other hand, proved dangerous on the counterattack. Hollerbach, who is associated with 1. FC Köln, used one to compensate. The 22-year-old scored his second goal shortly before the break. Looking at the net result four days earlier, there was never any real excitement.
The descent has profound consequences for Arminia. Financially, the decline has hit the traditional club hard – although the Bielefeld side have said they are not worried about the license. Also, almost all player contracts do not apply to the 3rd division. A complete revolution is imminent. After all, striker Klos wants to continue. « I don’t stop like that. It’s my club, » the 35-year-old said after the first leg at the microphone of « Sky ». In a remarkable interview, Klos also strongly criticized his own teammates and denied the team’s character as captain. The game in Wiesbaden was about to be called off due to rioting Arminia fans.
Wehen Wiesbaden can now celebrate the second attempt after a curious league final. The Hessians had already celebrated promotion with their fans on the pitch on the final day of the Third Division game, but were then overtaken by VfL Osnabrück. Fans who had traveled with them threw a big party in the guest pavilion during the match.
