VfB Stuttgart stays in Bundesliga – HSV misses miracles in relegation second leg

The VfB turns the game thanks to Millot

VfB Stuttgart remains in the Bundesliga. The Swabians won 3-1 (0-1) in the return match at Hamburger SV on Monday evening. Enzo Millot turned the tables for the Premier League side with his 48th and 64th minute goals after sixth-placed Sonny Kittel gave the hosts an early lead in front of 55,500 fans. Silas (90th +7) scored the final score. The first duel was 3-0 for the team coached by Sebastian Hoeneß. HSV is thus in its sixth season in the German lower house.

Much had been said about the supposed magic of the Volksparkstadion, in which the Hamburgers had not lost for more than seven months. « There are always miracles, » sporting director Jonas Boldt said shortly before ‘Sky’ kicked off. And then came Kittel. The 30-year-old fired the ball into the goal from a good 25 yards, tens of thousands of HSV fans cheered, coach Tim Walter roared with joy.

The fragility of Hamburg’s luck, however, was revealed almost immediately afterwards when Chris Führich, strong in the first leg, only touched the side net (7th). And much more when Serhou Guirassy artistically marked the supposed equalizer of the turn (17th). However, the goal didn’t count due to a previous offside position at the halfway line.

The Bundesliga side weren’t as confident in this phase as they were in the first leg. The selection of coach Hoeneß, who had expressly warned against the mood, remained dangerous. HSV goalkeeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes, who had avoided the worst in Hamburg in the first leg, twice saved the pressed Stuttgart team in a few seconds (23rd / 24th).

Apart from initially inconsequential swings, HSV fared much better in the duels than last Thursday. For the ailing Jonas David, Walter had sent loanee Javi Montero into defensive play. Jean-Luc Dompé and Kittel, in particular, tried offensively to create a goal threat with speed.

At VfB, Florian Müller again kept goal in place of the still ill Fabian Bredlow. After conceding an early goal, the 25-year-old excelled in a Bakery Jatta header before the break, but by then the first half was already over. Robert Glatzel’s powerful and promising shot misses the VfB goal without any action from Müller (40′).

HSV celebrated their biggest home victory against Stuttgart in October 2019. In the Second Division 6: 2, which would have been enough for promotion on Monday, Walter was still VfB coach. As Hamburg manager, he watched the game of his oldest HSV starting XI, who was 27.4 on average, even more closely after the equalizer. Millot scored from Guirassy and rewarded VfB for the best start to the second half.

HSV again needed three goals to at least force extra time. It was noticeably quieter in the stadium during this phase, and the approximately 6,000 VfB fans who had traveled with us could be heard much better. The Stuttgart pros acted more compactly in the minutes that followed, still waiting for the next counterattack. When Heuer Fernandes made a bad pass with Millot’s second goal, the game finally went to Hamburg. After the VfB pros cheered in front of the HSV fans and the peloton formed, referee Bastian Dankert handed out several yellow cards. Glatzel then had Hamburg’s best chance in the second half (74th). But nothing changed at the end of relegation.
