Sevilla FC sacks coach Jorge Sampaoli: worst place since 2000 threatens

14th in league

Sevilla FC reacted to the sporting decline and parted ways with coach Jorge Sampaoli. The 63-year-old, who only took over from Julen Lopetegui in October, is due to leave after 31 games in power and a 1.45 points average. This was announced by the LaLiga club on Tuesday, two days after the 0-2 (0-0) at Getafe FC.

« The fact that the team has failed to move away from the bottom of the table since he took over as manager and the face the team has shown in recent games has led the club to take this decision, seeking a response from the team to make a change for the final twelve matchdays, » the press release read.

Sevilla are 14th in the table with 28 points and only two points clear of 19. Since their relegation in the 1999/2000 season and their direct return the following year, the Andalusians have always managed a single-digit place in the table . Last season, Lopetegui led the Blanquirrojos to fourth place, qualifying for their third successive Champions League campaign. In the « premier league », Sevilla was relegated to the Europa League in third place in the group with Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund and FC Copenhagen, where Manchester United are awaiting the quarter-finals.
