FC Schalke 04 is facing the biggest transfer blow of this winter so far: Edin Džeko has given a verbal commitment to the Royal Blues, according to consistent media reports. An agreement has now also been reached with AC Fiorentina. According to transfer journalist Gianluca Di Marzio and the “WAZ”, Džeko will land in Germany on Wednesday in order to complete the medical examination with the Royal Blues on Thursday.

Previously, Paris FC had long been in the race for the experienced striker. The French also reportedly reached a verbal agreement with Džeko, but the 39-year-old ultimately chose Schalke. His contract with the Italians expires at the end of the season. Bosnia’s best national player has played eleven matches in Serie A this season, but has failed to score. The Viola is open to an exit to remove Džeko from the payroll.
Schalke have reportedly offered the veteran striker a highly performance-related contract until the end of the season. According to reports, each hit would be rewarded more. Additionally, Džeko would receive a high bonus if promoted. However, the salary structure should not be broken. The main winner is currently captain Kenan Karaman (31), with 800,000 euros according to rumors.
Schalke convinces Džeko with trio around coach Muslic
The fact that Džeko did not opt for Paris FC, who was also interested and better placed financially, is said to be mainly due to the intensive exchanges with his national team colleague Nikola Katic (29), former Schalke player Sead Kolasinac (32) and S04 coach Miron Muslic. The latter had already received a gift of a Bosnian jersey from Džeko in November.
“I don’t comment on transfer rumors, even though you packaged it with a lot of charm and are making a stuffed animal here,” Muslic kept a low profile after the second division leader’s 0-0 draw at Hertha BSC on Saturday evening. « I don’t comment on rumors. I haven’t done that in the last seven months. I won’t do it today either. »
Before his great international career, Džeko played for VfL Wolfsburg from 2007 to the end of 2010 and became German champion with Lower Saxony in 2009. A year later, he became the Bundesliga’s top scorer with 22 goals. In January 2011, he went to Manchester City for 37 million euros. This was followed by spells at AS Roma, Inter Milan and Fenerbahce.
