The first leg of the CL qualifiers between Real Madrid and Benfica caused a sensation. After Gianluca Prestianni’s alleged racist insult towards Vinícius Júnior, Fifa president Gianni Infantino also spoke out.

Infantino wrote in a statement released by FIFA that he was « shocked and saddened by the incident. » “Racism has absolutely no place in our sport or in society – we need the support of all stakeholders to hold those responsible to account,” the president was quoted as saying.

He also praised referee François Letexier for activating the anti-racist protocol and stopping the match. The match resumed after ten minutes and the Whites now head into next week’s playoff second leg with a 1-0 lead.
