As expected, Fortuna Düsseldorf has extended the contract of coach Daniel Thioune. The fifty-year-old signed a new working document until June 30, 2028. According to media reports, this should contain a complexly structured exit clause.

Thioune joined Düsseldorf in February 2022 as Christian Preußer’s successor and has since been absent 105 times, which is now surpassed by only eight coaches. Among all coaches with at least 100 games, Thioune has 1.78 points per game, the second-best rate since Kuno Klötzer in the 1960s. However, the record has suffered enormously since October. In the last six matches, Fortuna lost four times, notably against Thioune’s former club, HSV.

The former Hamburg and Osnabrück coach came close to promotion to the Bundesliga with the Düsseldorf side last summer, but failed dramatically in relegation at VfL Bochum after winning the first leg away 3-0. After the weak last weeks, Fortuna is currently only in seventh place in a very tight 2nd league. In the standings, only six points separate first place and 12th place. Düsseldorf is three points behind leader Paderborn.

“We want to experience continuity at Fortuna because we consider this to be the foundation of sustainable development. Daniel worked excellently for almost three years and developed both the individual players and the team. With his positive charisma, he has also proven to be a very good ambassador for Fortuna beyond sport. That is why we continue our common path with conviction and look forward to the coming years,” said sports director Klaus Allofs.

Thioune added: “It’s a coach’s desire to work over time to be able to develop something. This requires trust. Since I started working in Düsseldorf, I have felt the trust of the managers and the people in and around the club. During my tenure as head coach, we continued to develop well on a sporting level and experienced many emotional moments together. There is a noticeable solidarity between the team and the supporters, something has grown in Fortuna. I want to continue on this positive path. It is my great ambition to overcome all resistance with my coaching team in order to achieve our common goals.
