Marvin Friedrich will return to Union Berlin after four and a half years. The 30-year-old central defender, who left the Iron Men for Borussia Mönchengladbach in the winter of 2022, will not receive a new contract with the Fohlen. According to “Sky”, they will return to the capital for free this summer.

Friedrich had the best time of his career at the Union, playing 141 matches (9 goals) and increasing his market value to 10 million euros. The move to Gladbach was supposed to be the next step in his career, but he could not match his performance there and had to continue fighting for his usual place. This season he has made just seven appearances lasting 149 minutes, the fewest in a year since his transfer.

Within the Union, he must now fill the void that his own successors might leave behind. Diogo Leite and Danilho Doekhi were each signed as Friedrich’s replacements in the summer of 2022 and are unlikely to extend their contracts, which are also expiring. For the upcoming season, only Leopold Querfeld and on-loan talent Oluwaseun Ogbemudia (Waldhof Mannheim) are currently in Köpenick’s squad.
